My excursion with the black bear researchers started with a “The Three Bears” theme. What occurred was closer to “Animal House.”

Earlier this month the group working on a UW-Stevens Point black bear research project — a collection of academics, volunteers and observers — clambered down a steep, slippery 80-foot cliff in the backcountry of the Penokee Hills near Mellen in Ashland County...

...“It’s very unusual to see that many bears denning in such close proximity to each other,” said Tim Ginnett, the UW-Stevens Point professor who runs the bear research project. “There's a lot of areas in that pile of rocks that make nice cozy places to den.”
