Study seeking the bear facts

UW-Stevens Point is seeking some community help as they continue their research on black bears in northern Wisconsin.

“My role right now is basically going in and getting information about any newly reported dens and walking in finding out what we’ve got out there and setting up schedules,” said Maggie Heino, the project’s local representative Northern Wisconsin coordinator/researcher. “It’s a long-term project, this has been going on up here, here on the mainland and the Stockton Island since like 1984. I’ve been involved with it for over 30 years.”

While she wasn’t sure exactly how many bears have been tagged over the course of the study, Heino said she personally has handled over 1,500 bears.
