Students on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus could see their fees increase by as much as $275 a year to pay for a $40 million health and wellness facility approved by students last week.
In the first step of what might be a years-long process, students approved the proposal in an online vote held by the Student Government Association. Of the 1,538 students who voted, 923, or 60 percent, voted in favor and 615 voted against the proposal.
The project next must be approved by the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents and the state Building Commission. Al Thompson, UWSP’s vice chancellor for student affairs, said he would like to see the university break ground on the project in the 2015-16 school year, but he acknowledged that it could take years to win final approval.
