A local event aimed at increasing awareness about cancer raised $13,000 for research this weekend.

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point chapter of Colleges Against Cancer hosted the campus' 15th annual Relay for Life, a 12-hour event that started Friday night and ended Saturday morning. The event took place at the Health Enhancement Center and intends to raise awareness about the disease while also raising funds for the American Cancer Society.

Relay for Life is one of the main fundraisers for the American Cancer Society and it takes place in more than 20 countries each year. The event is based on three principals, according to its website: celebrating cancer survivors, remembering people who are fighting the disease or have died from it, and fighting back against cancer.
