Like many other people whose lives were torn apart by the Great Recession, Shannon Boushon finds herself back in school and looking for a new way to earn a living.

After 16 years as a medical transcriptionist, Boushon’s annual salary dropped more than $20,000 during a three-year span as computers took over the work for many health care providers. Now 36 years old, Boushon is enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and working toward a new career working with animals in a zoo or nature conservancy.
