Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony concert at UW-Stevens Point
4/25/2018

Iconic works and those that pay tribute will be among the pieces performed in concert by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony on Thursday, May 3.

The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Michelsen Hall at the Noel Fine Arts Center. The groups are led by conductor Michael Butler, an assistant professor and director of bands at the university.

The Wind Symphony will perform "Nitro" by Frank Ticheli, an energetic fanfare inspired by the nitrogen in the Earth's atmosphere. Junior music major James Kuzmic, Allenton, will conduct his own composition, "Beyond the Skies," to pay tribute to his late older brother. "Americans We," a march by Henry Fillmore, and the iconic Second Suite in F by Gustav Holst, based on folk songs of Great Britain, finish the symphony's program.

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform two works that pay tribute to the late composer, David Maslanka, who visited UW-Stevens Point in March 2017. The first, "How Deep the Father's Love for Us," was arranged by Anthony Labounty and is based on a Christian hymn. The second is Maslanka's powerful Symphony No. 4.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, $5 for UW-Stevens Point students, faculty and youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D. if not sold out. Tickets are available at the University Information and Tickets Office in the Dreyfus University Center, by calling 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378 or at http://tickets.uwsp.edu. Tickets may be purchased at the door if available. Proceeds benefit student scholarships.
