An upcoming Department of Music concert at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will bring together two ensembles performing with new names.

Held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, the concert will feature the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, formerly the Wind Ensemble, and the Wind Symphony, formerly the Concert Band. The name changes reflect 50 years of symphonic wind ensembles at UW-Stevens Point. A special concert marking this milestone will be held in February 2018. Both ensembles are directed by Assistant Professor Michael Butler, director of bands.

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform "Fanfare from Festmusik der Stadt Wien" by Richard Strauss, upon its 75th anniversary, and "Entry March of the Boyars" by Johan Halvorsen. Music education major Brenna Ohrmundt will conduct "October" by Eric Whitacre. Marking the 20th anniversary of "Concertino for Four Percussion and Wind Ensemble" by David Gillingham, the piece will feature student soloists Brian Cyr, Alyson Evans, Lucas Fischer and Curtis Hanson, upon its 20th anniversary.

The Wind Symphony will perform "Light Cavalry Overture" by Franz von Suppé, "Dum Spiro Spero" by Chris Pilsner, "The Fairest of the Fair" by John Philip Sousa and "Fantasy on a Theme by Sousa" by Andrew Boysen.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, $5 for UW-Stevens Point students, faculty and youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D. if not sold out. Tickets are available at the University Information and Tickets Office in the Dreyfus University Center, by calling 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378 or at http://tickets.uwsp.edu. Tickets also may be purchased at the door if available. Proceeds benefit student scholarships.
