An upcoming concert will celebrate 50 years of music by the Symphonic Wind Ensemble at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center, paying tribute to the ensemble's contributions to the university and greater musical community. The ensemble is directed by Assistant Professor Michael Butler, director of bands at the university.
The performance will feature favorite pieces by past directors, including "Fanfare for the Common Man" by Aaron Copland, "Huldigungsmarsch" and "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral" by Richard Wagner, "First Suite in E-Flat" by Gustav Holst, "Amazing Grace" arranged by William Himes and "The Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa.
The ensemble was the first of its kind in the state and has performed at national and international conferences, including twice at the national music educators conference. In 2017, the ensemble was recognized by the College Band Directors National Association as one of the top small collegiate wind bands in the United States.
Concert tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens, $10 for UW-Stevens Point students and youth.
