A free, pilot program aimed at increasing children’s
confidence and performance in mathematics is being offered through the
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
The Math and Parent Partners Program (MAPPS) is for
children of all ages, as well as their parents and teachers who want to learn
effective ways to help students with math. It is being held Tuesday evenings
from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 11, 18, 25, March 4, 11, 25 and April 1.
Sessions will be offered in the UW-Stevens Point Dreyfus University Center,
1015 Reserve St., Stevens Point, and will focus on adults and children working
together to solve problems. Participants may attend any of the sessions, but
are encouraged to attend as many as possible.
This collaboration between the UW-Stevens Point
Department of Mathematical Sciences and Office of Continuing Education focuses
on understanding fractions, decimals and percent. Future MAPPS programs will
center on other mathematical concepts.
UW-Stevens Point Mathematics Lecturer Ann Kiefer will
lead sessions for children in fourth grade and up and their parents, as they
take part in math games, activities and homework. Children in third grade and
younger will be provided child care that uses math-centered activities. Pizza
and snacks will be provided for both groups.
