Jazz trumpeter Wallace Roney will bring his quintet to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point as part of the annual Jazz Festival.
The band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, in Michelsen Hall in the Noel Fine Arts Center, 1800 Portage St., Stevens Point. The public performance caps a day of jazz study by hundreds of high school and middle school students from around Wisconsin, sponsored by the UW-Stevens Point Department of Music. The public may attend faculty master classes held from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, and a question-answer session with the quintet from 3-4 p.m. in Michelsen Hall.

Roney learned and perfected his music with jazz masters Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Williams, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins and others. He had a special relationship with jazz legend Miles Davis, who mentored him and chose him to share the stage for a historic performance in 1991. After Davis' death, Roney joined several jazz artists to tour the world in tribute.
"My goal is to make the best music I can," said Roney. "I filter my expression through the jazz experience."
The Wallace Roney Quintet includes Roney and his brother Antoine Roney on trumpet, pianist Carlos McKinney, bassist Clarence Seay and drummer Eric Allen. The group is currently touring internationally.
