An environmental sociologist will discuss the varying attitudes about wolves in the Midwest and Sweden in a public lecture at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Tom Heberlein, professor emeritus at UW-Madison and a visiting professor at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, will present the lecture on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 5 p.m. in the Laird Room of the Dreyfus University Center. The lecture is free of charge.
Heberlein will show how attitudes have been responsible for the success of wolf restoration and identify the possibilities for a negative shift in attitudes toward wolves in the future. This lecture is drawn from his book, “Navigating Environmental Attitude,” recently published by the Oxford University Press.
Previously director of the Center for Resource Policy Studies and Programs at UW-Madison, Heberlein has published a number of scientific studies on attitudes toward wolves in several publications, including “The Wildlife Society Bulletin,” “Biological Conservation,” and “Society and Resource Management.” In 2006 he helped organize the visit of a special Swedish commission on large carnivores and wolves to the United States.
