Judah and the Lion

An alternative band that blends folk, pop, hip-hop and rock and roll will perform at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in May.

Judah and the Lion, with opening act Billy Raffoul, will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, at the Quandt Fieldhouse, 2050 Fourth Ave., Stevens Point. The concert is sponsored by UW-Stevens Point Centertainment Productions.

Tickets go on sale Friday, Feb. 23, for $26.25 in advance or $31.25 the day of the show, plus service fees. Purchase tickets through the Dreyfus University Center University Information and Ticket Office, http://tickets.uwsp.edu or 1-800-838-3378.

Judah and the Lion was formed in Nashville by musicians from separate corners of the United States who brought their diverse backgrounds together. Their second album, "Folk Hop N Roll" highlights their wide-ranging sound with fuzz bass, hip-hop percussion, distorted banjo riffs and super-sized melodies. A single from that album, "Take it all Back," reached No. 1 on the alternative songs chart.

"There are no boundaries," said the band's front man, Judah Akers. "We wanted to make something raw, something with attitude."

The band has played across the United States and Scandinavia. "Our shows are all about the experience," said Akers. "All the songs were made with that in mind. They are fun, carefree and youthful, and we live our lives that way too."
