UW-Stevens Point faculty expert discusses legacy of 'place'
1/28/2020

A place is more than a location in a geographic space, it is imbued with human character and meaning. Learn more about how geographic information system (GIS) mapping technology can be used to compile and share a rich narrative of place in a free lecture offered by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

"Preserving the Legacy of Place" will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, by Douglas Miskowiak, GIS Center education specialist. Held in the Pinery Room of the Portage County Public Library, this is the fifth talk in the eight-part 2019-2020 Community Lecture Series sponsored by UW-Stevens Point's College of Letters and Science. The public may attend free of charge.

"Legacies can be grand or tiny, lovely or ruinous," said Miskowiak. "This lecture provides a means to reflect upon and design the legacy of places you care deeply about."

In his role with the UW-Stevens Point GIS Center, Miskowiak explores the influences of GIS to inform, educate, engage and empower the public in community decision making. He has worked with communities and citizens across Wisconsin applying GIS methods for innovative decision making, public participation, plan development, assessment, implementation and monitoring.
