Joshua Hagen has been chosen as the next dean of the College of Letters and Science at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Hagen has served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., since 2016. Prior to that, he served for six years as chair of the Department of Geography at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., where he was also a professor of geography since 2003. He taught a range of classes and has maintained an active record of scholarly publications and conference presentations. He has received research grants and awards from numerous organizations, including the German Academic Exchange Service, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and Fulbright Scholar Program.
He received Marshall University's Distinguished Artists and Scholars Award as the Senior Faculty in Arts, Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences in 2013-2014.
"Hagen impressed everyone with his strong administrative experience and outstanding academic record. His approach to action-oriented strategic planning will be especially important to the college in these challenging times," said Greg Summers, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at UW-Stevens Point.
He succeeds Eric Yonke, who has served as interim dean for nearly three years. Yonke, professor of History who led UW-Stevens Point's Study Abroad program for more than a decade prior to becoming dean will retire this summer.
Hagen earned doctoral and master's degrees in geography from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He completed a bachelor's degree in geography and political science from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and is originally from Iowa.
He will begin his new role June 15, 2020.
