Benefits of study abroad discussed at free lecture
2/6/2013

The many benefits of study-abroad experiences will be discussed at a free public presentation sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Professor of Psychology Justin Rueb will present “The Educational and Psychological Benefits of Study-Abroad Programs” on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Pinery Room of the Portage Country Public Library, 1001 Main Street, Stevens Point. A question and answer segment will follow the talk. This is the fifth lecture in the College of Letters and Science 2012-13 Community Lecture Series.
Rueb believes study-abroad success and personal fulfillment, including increases in academic retention, motivation and cultural diversity and understanding, is achieved through a mixture of actual travel experiences and research. Some of the countries his students have visited include England, France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic and Austria.
“Having traveled in many countries with students, it is always a joy to watch them learn to be more effective when interacting with other cultures,” said Rueb. “My hope is that individuals who attend will leave with a greater understanding and appreciation as to why study-abroad programs are truly successful in aiding students’ future academic and work careers.”
Rueb earned his doctorate and master’s degree in industrial psychology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. His bachelor’s degree in behavior sciences-human factors is from the United States Air Force Academy. He teaches several courses, including Introduction to Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology and Statistics for Psychologists. His research has been selected for publication by a number of organizations including Central Wisconsin Business, Military Psychology and the Journal of Social Behavior and Personality.
