In 1976 she was selected by&nbsp;<em>Charge Magazine<\/em>&nbsp;as one of the 29 &#8220;most effective teachers in the fields of biology, English and political science in American Higher education.&#8221; In 1985 she received the Frank Chisholm Award, highest recognition for meritorious service given by the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Croft wrote and published many works including the co-authored&nbsp;<em>The Leisure Pen: A Book for Elderwriters&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>The Writing Laboratory: Organization Management and Methods<\/em>. She contributed&nbsp;to professional and trade journals and presented at various conferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Professor Croft&#8217;s 2018 obituary in the&nbsp;<em>Stevens Point Journal,&nbsp;<\/em>Croft remained an active member of society, including participation in the following groups: Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church and worked on various committees including United Way of Portage County, Woman&#8217;s Fund of Portage County, Portage County Community Foundation Grants Committee, Commission on Aging, Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra Guild, UW-Stevens Point Chancellor&#8217;s Advisory Council, Health and Human Services Advisory Board, Plover Library Committee, Ministry Health Care Fund and Grants Committee, Lincoln Center Facilities Committee, Habitat for Humanity Supporter, the League of Women Voters, and the Learning Is Forever (LIFE) retirement program at UWSP.\u200b<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"788\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/tutoring-learning-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2026\/05\/MaryCroft-788x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-145 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/tutoring-learning-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2026\/05\/MaryCroft-788x1024.png 788w, https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/tutoring-learning-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2026\/05\/MaryCroft-231x300.png 231w, https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/tutoring-learning-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2026\/05\/MaryCroft-768x998.png 768w, https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/tutoring-learning-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2026\/05\/MaryCroft-1182x1536.png 1182w, https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/tutoring-learning-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2026\/05\/MaryCroft.png 1397w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 788px) 100vw, 788px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Mary Croft founded and directed the UWSP Writing Lab, now part of the Tutoring-Learning Center, which became a national model.
