Design Tech

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design & Technology

Design defines and shapes the appearance of the world as it is presented on stage. The BFA degree in Design and Technology enables its graduates to work in a wide variety of disciplines and venues. The core requirements of the degree cover a broad range while the elective options permit focused in depth training in particular areas. Courses are offered in all levels of scenic, lighting, costume, makeup, sound, and properties design. Specialty courses include scene painting, costume crafts, rendering techniques, technical production, costume construction, stage management, and computer technology.

The department offers an active production schedule that affords design/tech students ample opportunities to assist and lead design both mainstage and studio productions as well as dance performances. Hands-on immersion behind the scenes provides the greatest chance for students to put their classroom skills to use and experiment with new ideas. The Design/Technology Program is proud of its graduates who have gone onto work with leading theatre and dance companies, theme parks, touring productions, and universities across the country.

The department prides itself in striking a balance between academic and production work. Both areas are vitally important. We believe in student learning through active participation in theatrical productions. Design and technical majors typically have a production assignment every semester during their tenure in our department. Beginning responsibilities usually start with smaller shows and/or assistant positions. Students build on their successes and as seniors often design large productions on our main stage.
