On
April 26-27, 2018, Professors Barry, Bohm-Jordan, and Bowers facilitated an annual overnight field trip to Chicago under the
banner of urban diversity and environmental justice. About 30 students and faculty participated in this inspiring trip and they visited:
Jane Addams Hull-House museum,
which provided an historical snapshot on immigration, poverty, and
gentrification along with a poignant biography on a figure who reflected
the importance of both our disciplines, sociology and social work perfectly.
Little Village Environmental Justice Organization,
whereby we took a ‘Toxic Tour’ that highlighted issues related to urban
pollution, gentrification, and criminal justice in the Little Village.
Greenline Coffee/Sunshine Ministries,
where we discussed with local non-profit organizations about the
effects of gentrification and economic revitalization in Woodlawn.
