BA Art

Our BA in Art is a great degree for the student who loves to be creative but doesn’t see themselves working in an art job. The BA in Art consists of 48 credits within the major and can easily combine with another major such as Business, Communication, Psychology, or Biology allowing you to pursue your professional interests while staying connected and growing your creative talents. Alternately, you could pair the BA in Art with multiple Minors such as Communication, Dance, Environmental Education, Museum Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, or Web Development to name a few.

Creative professionals are highly valued employees in every business and organization. Some choose the entrepreneurial path or become self-employed professional artists or go on to graduate school.

Get Involved on Campus

Many students find community connection and gain professional experience through joining student groups. Read more about the student organizations in the School of Design and Communication in the links below. You can find additional job opportunities and ways to connect on the Stevens Point Involvement Network (SPIN).

Gain Experience Outside the Classroom

  • Exhibition Opportunities / Competitions
The annual Juried Student Exhibition offers students the chance to win monetary awards. Each year we also hold a Scholarship Competition giving students awards for excellence in different Art disciplines and for Leadership and Service. Students have options to exhibit their work on our three campuses and will regularly get notified about calls for entry to local, regional, national and international art shows.

  • Public Art / Community Work
The Carlsten Gallery Student Advisory Committee (CGSAC) holds an annual competition for students to create Public Artwork. Students gain experience with proposal writing, presentations, and working with a faculty mentor. Opportunities in the community include the annual call for proposals for the Stevens Point Sculpture Park.

  • Visiting Artists / Workshops
Every year we host different visiting artists who hold workshops and give lectures on campus. Student groups sponsor different on-campus events and trips to galleries or industry exhibitions. Students can also get involved and bring their favorite art heroes to Point to give talks or workshops.

Minor in Studio Art

Our Minor in Studio Art is a great way for you to dip a toe in the creative waters. At only 21 credits you can take the Art Minor and add other Minors to it. If you like the Art experience you are having, you can easily grow the Minor into a BA because all of the entry courses are the same. Enjoy the connection to your creativity with the Minor in Studio Art as a nice place to go while you focus on your other studies.

Minor in Art History

We also have a Minor in Art History which is very easy to add to any of our degree tracks. Whatever your aspirations are, knowledge of Art History helps you see the world more richly. Our dedicated faculty in this area are passionate about helping students understand the power of visual culture, globally, throughout history, and in our world today. If you are thrilled by Art History, and motivated, they can assist you in navigating your way to further study in graduate programs.
