College of Letters and Science Pre-Veterinary Program Degree

Major

BUILD YOUR VETERINARY CAREER WITH A DEGREE FROM UW-STEVENS POINT

UW-Stevens Point offers a wide variety of pre-professional programs, and our graduates have an excellent record of acceptance by graduate and professional schools. Many students who plan to enter a professional school program for Veterinary Science follow a program of study specifically designed for that career path. Although not required, we advise students in all pre-professional areas to get a bachelor of science degree before entering a professional school. Students are matched with an academic adviser during their sophomore year who can help identify the best course of study and preparation for veterinary science program applications.

Why study Pre-Veterinary Science at UWSP?

Relevant coursework with hands-on experience helps students prepare for careers in veterinary medicine. Courses at UWSP like Animal Physiology, Animal Behavior and Animal Parasitology provide experiential learning opportunities that set our graduates apart. Most of our classes and labs are taught by a Ph.D.-trained instructor with direct expertise in the field. You will study in our highly specialized teaching and research labs at UWSP! UW-Stevens Point biology students take classes and conduct research in the university’s new Chemistry Biology Building, a state-of-the-art, $75 million facility.

Faculty Expertise and Support

Hands-on research experience

Faculty mentored research experiences allow students to develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities essential to success in professional school and veterinary practice or research. A high percentage of our students participate in laboratory and field research projects with biology faculty mentors.  Many students also spend the summer conducting research at UW-Stevens Point and at a variety of cooperating institutions. Our undergraduates often publish their findings with our faculty and are listed as co-authors in top-tier biology research journals. We encourage our students to participate in field courses and internships. Students also have the opportunity to attend regional, national, and international conferences!

Animal Education and Care

UWSP Pre-Vet students get hands-on experience right here on campus! Students work as Animal Care Staff, taking care of our on-campus live animal collection that includes rodents, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. Student clubs, like the Herpetology Society and the Ichthyology Society, provide educational outreach programs with live animals. The Animal Behavior Club and the Pre-Vet Society volunteer at local animal shelters and multiple wildlife sanctuaries. Our students are specifically requested to serve as interns at local zoos and sanctuaries. These experiences with live animals not only strengthen veterinary applications, but they also energize and inspire our Pre-Vet students.
