The Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra (CWSO), in partnership with University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, will assume leadership of the Very Young Composers (VYC) program.
The transition ensures the future of this celebrated initiative, which for more than 15 years has provided hundreds of fourth- and fifth-grade students the opportunity to compose and hear their own music performed by professional and student musicians.
“The CWSO is excited and eager to add this program to our growing list of community outreach programs,” said Andy Moran, assistant professor and CWSO executive and music director. “As a parent of two children who have participated in Very Young Composers, I have seen firsthand how impactful the curriculum and instruction can be. Bob Rosen and the VYC staff have laid a strong foundation for this program to continue to flourish and grow.”
VYC was founded locally by Robert (Bob) Rosen, inspired by the work of composer Jon Deak. As Rosen prepares for retirement, he expressed confidence in the program’s future under CWSO leadership.
“During the 15 years of this award-winning program, hundreds of students have had the opportunity to compose original music,” said Rosen. “Now, under the direction of the CWSO, the program can continue to benefit the children of central Wisconsin and show how music composition can be part of elementary school curricula.”
Details about the next cycle of the Very Young Composers program will be announced later this year.
The Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra is celebrating 76 years of bringing live music to the region. Its 65 musicians include music educators, university professors, students and professionals who share the mission to enrich, engage and educate through the power of performance.
