Resources for Struggling Students

• UWSP Dean of Students - Many students are unaware, but the DOS is who you should contact for emergency help if a crisis comes up in your life: a medical emergency that requires extended absences from class, mental health issues that affect your academic performance, incidents of bias/hate and sexual assault, financial/housing/food insecurity, interpersonal violence, etc.
• UWSP Counseling Center
• Portage County Adult Mental Health Services - There is sometimes a long waitlist at the UWSP Counseling Center, and this is an alternative local resource. Fees work on a sliding scale that is income-based.
• Midstate Independent Living Center - Portage County Health Services operates a mental health drop-in clinic out of this location.
• National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Portage and Wood County - This is the local branch of a national organization dedicated to helping those impacted by mental illness. They can point you to resources.
• NAMI Campus Chapter
• Open Path Psychotherapy Collective - This site can connect you with therapists who are willing to work with clients that either don't have health insurance, or don't have mental health coverage. It's low cost, and some offer remote counseling.
• Start Your Recovery - A free, online resource recommended by UWSP's Center for Prevention for those struggling with addiction.
• The Cupboard (Student Food Pantry)
• Community Thrift Store and Food Pantry
• Evergreen Community Initiatives - This nonprofit, religiously-affiliated organization offers a warming center for those who need shelter, as well as a food pantry.
• The Salvation Army, Stevens Point Location - This nonprofit offers free food, shelter, clothing, and addiction counseling to those in need.
• Financial Aid Unusual Circumstances Form - If you or your family have suffered unexpected financial hardship (from loss of a job, death or divorce, injury or illness, etc.), you can fill out this form and submit it for additional financial aid.
• Promoting Awareness/Victim Empowerment - An on-campus support group for students who are survivors of violence.
• Sexual Assault Victim Services - A Portage County agency designed to help survivors. If you want support, but do not want to report your assault to the university, this would be a good resource.
• Stevens Point Family Crisis Center - Help for survivors of domestic or interpersonal violence, including emergency housing.
• UWSP Student Legal Services - If you need legal advice, this service is free.
• Tenant Resource Center - If you live off-campus and have problems with your landlord, this is a useful collection of information.
