The wrong homepage appears in the browser

Q: I have two pages in my directory, one is named 'index.htm' which has a link to my picture page, which is named 'default.htm'. The 'index.htm' is my main page, but when I look it up through Netscape, the other page shows up first. What am I doing wrong?

A: When you access your web page through a browser (such as Netscape or Internet Explorer), the server will bring up your web pages in a particular order, one defined by the system administrator. The order of precedence on the student information servers is as follows:

  • default.htm
  • default.html
  • index.htm
  • index.html
  • policy.htm (the default page in everyone's directory)

If the server does not find the first name (default.htm) it will move on to look for the next (default.html) through the whole list. Only your main page should be named one of the first four in order to avoid confusion. In your case, your picture page, named 'default.htm' was found before your main page 'index.htm'. To fix the problem try changing the name of your picture page to something more descriptive like 'picture.htm'.
