Welcome to the Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic

The UW-Stevens Point Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic provides both diagnostic and intervention services for individuals who have complex communication needs resulting from the following conditions:

Our extensive Augmentative and Alternative Communication Lab provides individuals with the opportunity to match their communication and accessing needs with a variety of both high tech, light tech and low tech AAC systems. Graduate students, under the supervision of our clinical staff, gain experience with both AAC assessment and intervention.

Face coverings are encouraged, but not required in the Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic in the College of Professional Studies Building. If you are feeling sick, masking is recommended to decrease the risk of transmission of infection to others in the clinic.

Reputation for Excellence

The Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic is a clinical training facility. It has a reputation for excellence in serving the university and the Central Wisconsin area by providing clinical services as part of the professional preparation of students. Services, including evaluation, treatment, and consultation, are available to those of all ages, from infants to the elderly, and are provided by undergraduate and graduate students under the supervision of nationally certified, state licensed audiologists and speech-language pathologists.

Laboratory and clinical facilities are available for research and clinical training experiences in both audiology and speech/language pathology. The facility includes the following: a spacious reception area, graduate student offices, comfortable student lounge, student computer lab, therapy observation room, family conference room, Clinical Media Center, 10 individual therapy rooms, large group therapy room, four diagnostic suites, two clinical and two research audiological sound treated suites, two hearing aid labs, auditory and vestibular electrophysiological (ENG and ABR) testing lab, speech/hearing science instrumentation lab, gross anatomy lab, and a state-of-the-art augmentative/alternative communication AAC Lab.

Clinic Services for our Community and Campus

Audiological Services

Comprehensive hearing evaluations are offered for children and adults, and individuals are counseled on the results. If the person is a candidate for amplification, assistance and advice is provided regarding purchasing options for hearing aids or other assistive listening devices. Weekly follow-up visits are scheduled for new hearing aid users, in order to help individuals derive maximum benefit from their hearing aids. Audiologists provide individuals with a thorough orientation in the use, care, and maintenance of the specific amplification system.

Audiological services include the following:

  • Hearing screenings and comprehensive evaluations including: Pure Tone Thresholds and Speech Audiometry, Admittance Testing (tymps and acoustic reflexes), Central Auditory Processing, Electrophysiologic Testing (ABR and OAE), and Vestibular Testing (ENG)
  • Hearing screening and follow-up evaluations for infants
  • Aural rehabilitation
  • Hearing aid evaluation, fitting, maintenance, and repair

Speech/Language Services

A full range of speech/language diagnostic and therapy services is available. Assessment and treatment can be provided for the following communication concerns. These concerns may be secondary to cleft palate, cerebral palsy, autism, laryngectomy, hearing loss, cognitive disorders, learning disabilities, stroke, traumatic brain injury, or other neurological disorders.

Location

The clinic is conveniently located on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus on the lower level of the College for Professional Studies Building, 1901 Fourth Avenue. Reserved client parking is available in the lot directly in front of the College of Professional Studies. Access is provided for those who are physically challenged. The clinic is open Monday through Friday.

Clinic FAQs

The services of the clinic are available to people of all ages who have concerns about their speech, language, or hearing. Self-referrals and outside referrals are accepted.

The Speech Clinic is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. during the three academic semesters of the year and is closed for holiday and vacation breaks.

The Audiology Clinic schedules appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. during the three academic semesters of the year and is closed for holiday and vacation breaks.

Hearing aid repair service varies by semester, please call 715-346-3667 for additional information.

 

Reserved client parking is available directly in front of the College of Professional Studies in the U-shaped parking lot. Please park in a space designated as Clinic Patient Parking.

Evaluations and treatment are scheduled by appointment throughout each semester. Depending upon the services, there may be a waiting list. Please contact the clinical administrative assistant at 715-346-3667 for more specific information. If no immediate openings are available, every effort will be made to provide an appointment during the subsequent semester. Speech/language therapy sessions are typically scheduled two times per week, with the semester therapy schedule being set at the beginning of each semester. Audiology appointments are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Hearing aid repairs can be completed Monday through Friday.

The clinic offers exceptional services at competitive prices. Fees for the initial evaluation and treatment sessions vary according to the nature of the need and the type of service required. A copy of the current fee schedule for speech/language services or information on audiology evaluation cost estimates would be available upon request. Costs for hearing aids cannot be given until a full hearing evaluation has been conducted and we have determined the type of hearing aid that meets the needs of the patient. Payment in full is requested at the time of service. Services can be paid by cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover. Currently enrolled UWSP students receive evaluation and treatment services free of charge.

We do bill Security Health Plan and Medicaid (through Forward Health or with Security Health Plan as the managed care provider). Clients may wish to consult their health plan manual prior to making an appointment.
