Sustainable Food and Nutrition



As a sustainable food and nutrition (SFN) student at UW-Stevens Point you’ll be part of an innovative program that combines your passion for food, nutrition, helping people, and a healthy planet. You want a career focused within the community to build the pathways that make it easier for everyone to buy and eat healthier foods now and in the future. SFN program graduates become: 
  1. qualified nutrition educators who promote healthy and sustainable ways of living and eating by applying the science of:
    • diet and health
    • motivations and supports for people to make healthy lifestyle changes
    • how families, communities, and laws influence a person’s food choices
  2. leaders in community and food systems change by creating partnerships that:
    • support local farmers
    • reduce resource use and waste
    • honor social and cultural integrity
    • develop more robust local economic growth
    • apply the newest advances to understand our planet
SFN majors can choose electives in an area of emphasis, including one of the “5 Ps” of the United Nations 2030 Agenda  for Sustainable Development: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnerships.

Explore Career Opportunities in Sustainable Food and Nutrition

The SFN major was created in 2016 to meet the growing need for food and nutrition professionals who effectively bridge multiple sectors of politics, agriculture, health, community, and the economy to build a more sustainable and resilient world. The SFN degree opens doors in careers such as:

  • Nutrition and health education through university extension, non-profit, and public health agencies at the county, state, and national levels   
  • New business and nonprofit start-ups that accelerate sustainable community development  
  • Program management in sustainable food (e.g., farm to school, community gardens, farmers markets, urban agriculture), climate change, urban planning, and natural resources management
  • Sustainability law and policy in areas of water, food, agriculture, social justice, and economic development

SFN students can apply for early admission into two graduate programs to earn both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five years:

Use your classroom knowledge and skills to make a difference by joining a student organization. You’ll network with peers passionate about issues important to you and connect with professionals in organizations working on those issues. Consider:

Gain Experience Outside the Classroom

Our program owns and operates the CPS Café that provides hands-on experience in all aspects of food-service operation and environmentally-friendly management, including sourcing local ingredients.

The campus garden is a location where students learn about and explore organic agriculture.

We partner with community organizations (e.g., Farmshed), schools, farmers markets, businesses, and nonprofits so you gain experience while you study.
