The COA includes tuition and fees; housing and meals; and allowances for supplies, transportation, loan fees, and other miscellaneous personal expenses. Some of these are direct costs that are billed to your UWSP account and some are indirect costs that you are likely to incur but are not billed by UWSP. These costs are estimated; therefore, we strongly encourage you to plan your own specific budget based on your housing choice and meal plan, transportation needs, etc. Be sure to view your bill for actual charges when determining how much you owe the university each semester.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Where\u2019s My Financial Aid?\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I1EbAs2XpgE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Direct Costs<\/strong>&nbsp;are costs that are billed by the university that need to be paid directly to the university. Direct costs include tuition, fees, text rental, on-campus housing, and meal plans.&nbsp;The costs displayed below are estimated expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Indirect Costs&nbsp;<\/strong>are expenses that are related to attending school that we budget for but aren\u2019t paid directly to the school. We are required to include allowances for additional books and supplies, transportation, loan fees, and other miscellaneous personal expenses as part of the cost of attendance.&nbsp;The costs displayed below are average estimated costs; indirect costs may vary by student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Student Aid Index (SAI)<\/strong>&nbsp;is the number, based on the federal calculation, from the information provided on your FAFSA. The SAI&nbsp;is a measurement of your family&#8217;s financial strength and is used to determine your eligibility for financial aid. This is not the amount of money your family will have to pay for college, nor is it the amount of financial aid you will receive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gift Aid includes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/financial-aid-and-veteran-services\/grants\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"276\">Grants<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/financial-aid-and-veteran-services\/scholarships\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"279\">Scholarships<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and do not\u00a0require repayment. Some offers are based on financial need and some are based on merit. It should be noted, however, occasionally you may be required to pay back part or all of gift aid if, for example, you withdraw from school during a semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Net Cost<\/strong>&nbsp;is the estimated billable direct costs minus any grants, scholarships, or waivers you were offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/loans\"><strong>Federal Student Loans<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0must be\u00a0repaid, with\u00a0interest after you complete your degree. Federal\u00a0Subsidized loans do not accrue interest until after you graduate. Unsubsidized loans\u00a0accrue interest at the time of disbursement, but no student loan requires repayment until either you drop below half-time enrollment or graduate. The student is the borrower. In addition to accepting the loan(s), a first-time loan borrower must also complete entrance loan counseling and a master promissory note before the loan can be applied.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/financial-aid-and-veteran-services\/loans\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"289\"><strong>Federal Parent Loan<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students) is a federal loan that the student&#8217;s parent (or graduate students)\u00a0can borrow to\u00a0help with the student&#8217;s educational expenses. The parent (or graduate student) is the borrower. Interest accrues from the time of disbursement. The parent must apply for the PLUS loan and complete a master promissory note at studentloans.gov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/campus-activities-and-student-engagement\/\">Federal Work Study<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0are need-based funds that can be earned\u00a0throughout the year by working a part time job for any UWSP department or approved community non-profit organization to help pay for college costs. The student is paid an hourly rate and wages earned are paid directly to you via direct deposit. However, a student does not have to have work-study to be able to work on-campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/financial-aid-and-veteran-services\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2026\/05\/Stevie-Pointer-FA-Offer-2025-26.pdf\">View a sample financial aid offer letter<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The total amount of need-based sources of financial aid (grants, scholarships, subsidized loans, and work-study) cannot exceed a student\u2019s financial need. Only unsubsidized loans, PLUS, or private loans can cover any portion of your SAI. We encourage you to take the following steps BEFORE you accept your loans to determine your borrowing needs.<br><br>We are more than happy to meet with you to help you through these steps.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"panelcontainer nofirst\">\n<details class=\"wp-block-create-block-uwsp-accordion-section\"><summary class=\"accordion-heading\">Step 1: Review Your Costs<\/summary><div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>You may view your estimated cost of attendance in your accesSPoint or on our webpage. These are estimates, however, it&nbsp;\u200bwill help you determine what your direct educational costs will be to determine what you may owe for the semester. Bills for the Fall semester are typically generated at the end of August each year. Bills for the Spring semester are typically generated mid January. If possible and applicable, we recommend waiting to see your bill before determining if you need to borrow loans.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-create-block-uwsp-accordion-section\"><summary class=\"accordion-heading\">Step 2: Compare Your Aid Offer to Costs<\/summary><div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>The financial aid offers are made on an annual basis. Your bill is generated by term, so double your bill to get your annual costs. Or, you can use our estimated costs on our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/financial-aid-and-veteran-services\/educational-costs\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"220\">Cost of Attendance<\/a>\u00a0webpage. Don&#8217;t forget to add in housing and meal plan if you plan to live on campus! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If the amount is a POSITIVE number&#8230;<\/strong><br>You will have a balance due to the school. You can determine if you need a loan to cover it, if you can afford a payment plan, or even a combination of these options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If the amount is a NEGATIVE number&#8230;<\/strong><br>Your grants and scholarships should fully cover your costs. In this instance, you should not need to borrow, unless you need to borrow a bit extra for things like supplies or additional books.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-create-block-uwsp-accordion-section\"><summary class=\"accordion-heading\">Step 3: Balance Your Needs Versus Wants<\/summary><div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>Your loan has been offered to you based on your MAXIMUM eligibility, but that doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean that you need to take the full amount. If you want to take extra funds from your loans to assist with educational expenses, be sure to think about what you need versus what you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may need fuel to get to and from campus. You need class supplies and supplemental books. You need food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You want a newer computer. You want to go on a trip for Spring Break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bottom line&#8230; If it&#8217;s not needed, you should not be borrowing to get it.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-create-block-uwsp-accordion-section\"><summary class=\"accordion-heading\">Step 4: Think Ahead<\/summary><div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>Do you have additional expenses that you can plan ahead for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8cf370e7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p>Here are some common expenses that UWSP students plan for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Winterim course tuition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Study Abroad<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Summer course tuition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Housing or meal plan changes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Significant online coursework or additional course fees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Borrowing a full loan at the start of the year will leave you with little to no funds available to cover these costs. If you are thinking about studying abroad or taking courses outside of fall and spring, it is in your best interest to reduce your loans so that you have funds available to assist later.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-create-block-uwsp-accordion-section\"><summary class=\"accordion-heading\">Step 5: Accept the Loans You Need<\/summary><div class=\"accordion-content\">\n<p>If you are offered both a subsidized and unsubsidized loan, you should borrow as much as possible from the subsidized loan before you use any unsubsidized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Decline any unsubsidized funds that are not needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can reduce loan offer amounts! When you select Accept, you are able to edit the loan amount to a reduced total before you submit. Remember that loans are offered on an annual basis, so if you need $1,000 for the fall semester, you need to enter $2,000 to give you $1,000 for fall and $1,000 for spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want a loan for one semester only, this cannot be done via accesSPoint. Please contact our office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bottom line&#8230; Request more loans later if you end up needing more! All new students will also receive a paper financial aid offer by postal mail. If needed, all students can request to receive a paper copy of their financial aid offer.&nbsp;Don&#8217;t forget to view our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www3.uwsp.edu\/finaid\/Pages\/disclosures.aspx\">disclosures<\/a>&nbsp;for additional information and important details.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwsp-vtab-thetab\"><div class=\"vtab-tabtitle\">Electronic Consent<i class=\"fa-solid fa-caret-right\"><\/i><\/div><div class=\"vtab-tabcontent\">\n<div class=\"vtab-content-column bgpurple\"><div>\n<p>The Financial Aid and Veteran Services Office must receive voluntary consent from students to do business electronically. Students will be assigned a task in accesSPoint&nbsp;asking for this consent. If this task is completed and consent granted, you will be able to accept, reduce, or decline financial aid through accesSPoint. If this task is not completed or consent is not granted, we will send a paper financial aid offer. In order to accept, reduce, or decline the offer, students will need to make a copy of the paper offer, write their preferences for accepting or declining financial aid, sign this copy, and return it to our office.\u200b<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwsp-vtab-thetab\"><div class=\"vtab-tabtitle\">Accept\/Reduce\/Decline Your Offer<i class=\"fa-solid fa-caret-right\"><\/i><\/div><div class=\"vtab-tabcontent\">\n<div class=\"vtab-content-column bgpurple\"><div>\n<p>Once you know your offer is ready, navigate to the Financial Aid tile in accesSPoint to accept, reduce or decline your loans and\/or Federal Work-Study offer. Be sure to select the correct aid year at the top left corner. Offers of grants and scholarships are automatically accepted on your behalf.\u00a0The financial aid offers are generally for the entire academic year and will be split equally between fall and spring semesters. If you want to reduce a loan or work study award, click &#8220;Accept&#8221; and enter the amount needed in the box (whole numbers only).\u00a0After accepting, reducing and\/or declining the various aid options offered, click SUBMIT, then YES, and OK. Once submitted, any changes or updates must be made by our office.\u00a0If you need further guidance, check out our video above \u200bfor a step-by-step tutorial or click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwsp.edu\/financial-aid-and-veteran-services\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2026\/05\/How-to-Accept-Your-Award-powerpoint.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"352\">here<\/a>\u200b for a step-by-step process.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwsp-vtab-thetab\"><div class=\"vtab-tabtitle\">Complete Direct Loan Requirements<i class=\"fa-solid fa-caret-right\"><\/i><\/div><div class=\"vtab-tabcontent\">\n<div class=\"vtab-content-column bgpurple\"><div>\n<p>For many students, loans have become a necessary component of financing their educational expenses. Loans, by definition and regulation, must be repaid and therefore should be used sparingly and wisely. If you accept a loan you are responsible for repaying the loan plus interest. Remember that the more you borrow the higher the monthly repayment will be, so only take as much loan money as you will need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students or parents who plan to borrow Federal Direct Loans must complete loan requirements to receive them. Once a loan is accepted, the loan requirements can be found in accesSPoint under the Task tile or you can go directly to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/complete-aid-process\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/complete-aid-process<\/a>&nbsp;to complete Entrance Counseling and sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN). Please note that you will need to select University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point&nbsp;as the school to notify.\u200b&nbsp;On the &#8216;Notify a School&#8217; page, click on the &#8216;Search for a school&#8217; tab. Enter\u200b&nbsp;the school\u200b state (Wisconsin) and then&nbsp;either type in&nbsp;our school name (University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point)&nbsp;or&nbsp;search for our school code (003924).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwsp-vtab-thetab\"><div class=\"vtab-tabtitle\">Disbursement<i class=\"fa-solid fa-caret-right\"><\/i><\/div><div class=\"vtab-tabcontent\">\n<div class=\"vtab-content-column bgpurple\"><div>\n<p>The Office of Financial Aid and Veteran Services runs a process to authorize financial aid to students&#8217; accounts.&nbsp;Disbursement of funds to student accounts can begin up to 10 days prior to each term and\/or the start of your first course and&nbsp;typically occurs daily&nbsp;thereafter. Books are under text rental and included in your university fees therefore no special provisions are made for&nbsp;Pell eligible students to receive their rental books and supplies.\u200b Should you decide to opt out of text rental, please contact our office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that not all aid may disburse at the same time, and could be delayed depending on timing of your FAFSA, awarding, and completion of loan requirements. Completing all paperwork, including the FAFSA, as early as possible is the best way to ensure that your bill is paid in a timely fashion.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwsp-vtab-thetab\"><div class=\"vtab-tabtitle\">Private Scholarship, Loan, and Other Outside Aid Disbursements<i class=\"fa-solid fa-caret-right\"><\/i><\/div><div class=\"vtab-tabcontent\">\n<div class=\"vtab-content-column bgpurple\"><div>\n<p>Awards, such as a scholarship from a church, corporation or fraternal organization can be very helpful in defraying some of the costs of college.&nbsp;Many times, funds from private scholarships and\/or loans will come straight to the University. If you are expecting private scholarships or other outside aid (private loans, tribal assistance, etc.), you&#8217;ll want to make sure that the University receives the money. You can view any aid posted to your account in your accesSPoint under Account Activity. Please contact the awarding organization if your funds have not arrived or have not been disbursed to your account.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200bPlease note that these outside resources may affect the amount of aid the student receives from the school, but they are typically considered as a replacement for the least desirable form of assistance. If the outside resource (scholarship, grant, etc.) has been reported to our office prior to the creation of the financial aid offer, it will normally be taken into account when the financial aid offer is made. In this situation, the outside resource will be named on the award letter; that way the student knows that the aid has already been adjusted to account for the outside award. Students who receive a financial aid offer that does not show a known outside resource should report the outside resource to our office immediately.
