CBCW Data Entry

CBCW participants collect valuable data during their conversations with boaters and anglers at lake and river landings. The information they record on their datasheets is entered into an online DNR database called SWIMS, which stands for Surface Water Integrated Monitoring System. All of the water data collected around the state by the DNR and its partners is entered into this database.

If you’ve already set up your SWIMS account, you can enter data now by logging into SWIMS. If you are new to entering CBCW data, please read on for step-by-step instructions on how to access SWIMS.​

How to access the SWIMS database

Step 1: Create a MyWisconsin ID. You will use your MyWisconsin​ ID and password to access the SWIMS database.​

​​​​Step 2: Now, your SWIMS profile needs to be set up so that you can log in. Send us an email​​ at LakesSupport@uwsp.edu​ and share:

  • Your first and last name.
  • The email address that you used to set up your MyWisconsin ID.
  • The name of the waterbody where you will be conducting CBCW.​
  • ​​The name of the lake group or organization you are representing or working with.

Once your profile is set up properly, we will email you to let you know that you’re ready to login to SWIMS!​

How to Enter and Edit CBCW Data

After you follow​​ the steps above, you will be ready to enter CBCW data. See below ​​for step-by-step guidance on how to enter and edit your CBCW data.

  • Log in to ​​​SWIMS with MyWisconsin ID & Password
    ​​​​​​The Surface Water Integrated Monitoring System (SWIMS) is used to store data from a variety of surface water monitoring​ projects around the state, including CBCW data.

    ​This video explains how to enter watercraft inspection data into the SWIMS database. You will need to have an ID and password​ in order to access the database. If you don’t have one yet, please follow the instructions on how to set-up a MyWisconsin ID above.​

    You can find some very helpful data reporting tips on the DNR’s “CBCW: Reporting Your Data” webpage, such as how to add a boat landing to your project or how to report data for multiple inspectors who worked the same landing on the same day​

    • View CBCW Data

    CBCW data is compiled and summarized into graphs that allow us to see trends and changes over time. To see the watercraft inspection trends for your county, lake, or landing, visit the links below and use the dropdown menu to personalize the data summary. The CBCW data totals that are entered into SWIMS can be viewed for individual lakes, landings, counties, and more.
