A Summer Enrichment Experience for Highly Achieving Academic Students in Grades K-6

Youth in College is a part of the Summer School Program of the Stevens Point Area Public School District, hosted by the Talent Development Center, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The traditional Youth in College program is for students who are currently in five-year-old Kindergarten-sixth grade and are functioning above their grade level placement. Typical students who attend these challenging, fast-paced programs are two grade levels above other students their age academically or intellectually.
How does one register for Youth in College?
Online registration will open on Monday, March 25, 2019, for our 2019 summer program. Our registration processes will be made available to past participants, Stevens Point Area Public School District students, and students outside the Stevens Point Area Public School District who express interest in registering for Youth in College. We will also post registration directions and links here on our website.
What is required in the application process?
Both Youth in College and the Youth Teaching Academy applications will be reviewed by the admissions committee and students and families will be notified of their acceptance into the program within two weeks after the application deadline (expect to hear back by Friday May 24, 2019). Program fees will be due prior to the start of our program, Monday June 17, 2019.
If your student resides within the Stevens Point Area Public School District program fees can be paid through your child's Skyward account after their acceptance is granted.
If your student resides outside of the Stevens Point Area Public School District program fees can be mailed to UWSP Youth in College, CPS 469, 1901 Fourth Ave. Stevens Point, WI 54481.
In District Program Fees:
Youth in College: $5.00
Youth Teaching Academy: $12.00
Out of District Program Fees:
Youth in College: $125.00
Youth Teaching Academy: $12.00
All students who are new to the Youth in College program are also required to submit a letter of recommendation completed by a current teacher. (Returning students are not required to submit these additional materials as we already have this information on file). If alternative evidence of high ability not mentioned above is available, please contact the UWSP Talent Development Center office for further direction. If an applicant is home schooled and does not have the above listed information, please complete the recommendation information and anticipate a phone call from the Talent Development Center if any clarification is required.
What is the program cost?
Historically Stevens Point Area Public School District has provided payment for the students who attend Youth in College from their district leaving the remaining $5 supply fee as the only fee needing to be covered by our participant's families. For participants who attend from outside of the Stevens Point Area Public School District the participant cost has been our full program fee of $125.
What is the structure of the program?
Students will enroll in one course that they will attend throughout the duration of the program.
The instructors for the Youth in College program are licensed teachers who have been selected for their exemplary teaching, subject matter expertise, enthusiasm, and enjoyment of teaching high academic ability students. Classes are small (10-15) to allow for individualized instruction.
