Central Wisconsin Innovative Certification (CWIC)

The CWIC ("quick") accelerated special education licensure program is ideal for those who have a non-teaching bachelor's degree and are either teaching special education with a license with stipulations (emergency license), or want a career change to impact students. The CWIC program is offered 100% online.

Program Benefits

  • Course completion for licensure in 18 months, with no compromise in quality of training.
  • Paid student teaching is an option to those already employed in a setting that meets student teaching requirements prior to the start of the student teaching semester. If you have specific questions about student teaching placements please contact the Office of Field Experiences.
  • Flexible curriculum that is completed online.
  • An M.S. in Education can be completed with an additional 3 credits taken after all other courses are completed.
  • Taught by UWSP faculty with extensive experience as special educators and classroom teachers.
  • Provision of mentors during your induction year (first year teaching) for additional support.
  • Completion of the Foundation of Reading Test or Alternative Pathway meet licensure requirements.
  • Free workshops and online training to assist students with passing the Foundations of Reading Test and/or completing the Alternative Pathway.
  • Allows for integration of course requirements with current education job responsibilities. 
  • Curriculum is credit-based which allows for financial aid.
  • Curriculum includes required practicum experience to ensure hands-on learning.

  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75. 
    • Probationary admission will be considered for a lower GPA.
  • Separate unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended. Photocopies accepted. 
  • Cover Letter describing your background and interest in becoming a special educator.
  • Current resume.
  • Completed Criminal Background Check: A criminal background check is required to apply to any licensing program in Wisconsin, per DPI code PI34.18(2) Request, print and upload a Wisconsin Department of Justice (Wisconsin DOJ) background check when you apply to a program: https://recordcheck.doj.wi.gov. We will accept a previous check that is no older than 6 months from the date you turn in your application. There is a small fee associated with this. It may take a few days to get this.
