MUED 602, Research in Music Education \u2013 Instructor: Dr. Beatriz Aguilar <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The MME at UW-Stevens Point is designed to encourage us to consider how the process of music education in American schools is conceived, designed, structured, practiced, and experienced by many different stakeholders. In this first course in the MME, designed for music educators who want to learn how to do action research, we will develop ways to analyze and apply the findings from others\u2019 research in order to be better teachers and lifelong learners, and improve our skills at expressing ourselves within our academic discipline. The goal of this initial course in the MME core sequence is to learn how to write a proposal for independent research and hone skills in music education research that are essential preparation for graduate level research, presentation, and thesis writing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

MUED 686, Theory and Practice of Instrument Repair, Adjustment, and Maintenance I \u2013 Instructor: Dr. Patrick Lawrence <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Beginning and intermediate brass and woodwind repair, focusing on cleaning, dent work, soldering, replacing pads, and locating leaks. Available for undergraduate credit as MUED 486. This course is part of a service-based pricing program. Special tuition will apply for students enrolling in this course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MUED 701, Philosophy of Music Education I \u2013 Instructor: Dr. Patrick Lawrence <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This course focuses on the historical and philosophical foundations of American music education. Additionally, students will explore contemporary practices of music education through various lenses regarding the function and purpose of music learning in current school systems and general culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MUED 702, Philosophy of Music Education II \u2013 Instructor: Dr. Laura Dunbar <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

MUED 702 continues from where 701 left off. In this course, we will further explore the evolution of well-known pedagogies and investigate current scholarship in regard to their application in current music education practices. In this class we will continue to study the historical roots, as well as the societal influences and recent developments in music education. Then, we will then apply these understandings to the development of our own teaching praxis and our own analyses and critiques of existing theories of pedagogy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

MUED 787, Seminar in Music Education, Transformative Pedagogy\u2013 Instructor: Dr. Beatriz Aguilar <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This course examines music education through the lens of Transformative Pedagogy<\/strong>, engaging students in critical inquiry about how teaching and learning in music can promote access, inclusion, and social change. Drawing on the philosophical foundations established by transformative pedagogues, students will explore the intersections between theory and praxis to reimagine the purposes and practices of music education in contemporary contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MUS 592, An Analytical History of Jazz Improvisation \u2013 Instructor: Mathew Buchman <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This course provides a chronological study of improvised jazz solos on the student\u2019s major instrument, including transcription, analysis and performance of selected recordings. This course is available for undergraduate credit as MUS 392. This course fulfills either a music theory or music history requirement for the MME and counts as credit toward either the Music Theory or Music History Graduate Certificate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

MUS 623, Choral Literature \u2013 Instructor: Dr. Matheus Cruz  <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

This course will offer students an engaging journey through the rich history and diversity of choral music across the centuries. Offered fully online, this course combines guided listening, focused readings, collaborative study sessions, and practical assignments designed to deepen musical understanding while building resources directly applicable to teaching and conducting. Students will learn to identify choral works by listening, understand stylistic characteristics of major genres, and trace the evolution and interconnections of choral repertoire over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MUS 799, Thesis \u2013 Instructor: Dr. Beatriz Aguilar<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In this course you will conduct graduate-level research in consultation with an adviser. You have to enroll for 3 credits the initial semester; enroll for 1-2 credits, at the discretion of the Director of Music Education, until defense requirement fulfilled. May be repeated for credit for up to 6 credits.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
