When life happens, we are here to support you through it.
Case Management
Case management staff support students through issues or challenges impacting their well-being or ability to succeed. Most often, staff support students experiencing challenges related to academics, family stress, grief and loss, finances, mental health, illness or injury, and basic needs insecurity. Staff also assist students in navigating university processes such as appeals, withdrawal, or complaints.
As staff connect with students,
- We listen with care, compassion, and non-judgement.
- We respect individual autonomy and student dignity.
- We work together to identify barriers and possible solutions.
- We share options and resources that may be helpful.
- We empower students to take responsibility for their educational journey.
No concern is too big or too small.
Referrals for Support
Any member of our campus community may refer a student who needs added support, preferably by submitting a Student of Concern referral. Students may also self-refer through this form or by connecting directly with our office. When our office receives a referral, case management staff assess the information to determine next steps. Typically, we will outreach directly to the student to offer time to connect with us.
What to Expect
During your initial meeting, case management staff like to get to know more about you and the challenges you may be facing. To allow adequate time, we encourage students to schedule initial meetings for one hour. Staff are available to meet in person, via Zoom, or by phone – whatever is most convenient and comfortable for you.
After your first meeting, staff typically meet with students for follow-up and check in via phone or email periodically as well. Follow-up meetings tend to be shorter appointments, around 30 minutes.
A Note About Privacy
Case management staff maintain privacy of information and educational records as outlined by FERPA and university records retention policy. Staff in the Office of the Dean of Students are required to report incidences of sexual assault, interpersonal violence, suspected child neglect or abuse, and crimes via appropriate processes.
In cases of emergency, staff may contact the emergency contact students have on file with the university. This outreach is done on a case-by-case basis depending on the circumstances. When staff outreach to faculty about your classes, staff will share general information only (e.g. medical, family, personal reasons).
