EVIDENTIARY EXAMS & MEDICAL TREATMENT​

If you think you may require medical care, or think you may at any point wish to pursue legal action against the perpetrator of a sexual assault, you should obtain an evidentiary exam as soon as possible.  This visit will evaluate your medical condition and gather evidence that may be helpful in any future legal case.  If you want to obtain an evidentiary exam:

• Do not shower or douche.
• Save clothing, bed linens, and anything else that may contain evidence in a paper bag.  Bring them with you to your exam.
• Go to the emergency room at Ministry Saint Michael’s Hospital where you can receive a sexual assault exam performed by specially trained female nurses. The exam can be performed up to 72 hours after an assault, but is most successful if performed within the first 24 hours. 
• Sexual Assault Victim’s Services (SAVS) will be contacted by the hospital and you will be given access to an advocate from SAVS to help you if you wish to have one. The Stevens Point Police will also be informed that an assault has taken place, and they will come to the hospital to speak to you.  You may elect to speak to the police or not.  Discussing the matter with law enforcement or the SAVS advocate  is strictly voluntary. Should you discuss your situation with an officer, everything that you say to the police is held confidential, and they will not press charges or take action without your consent.
