Ages: 7-12 grade students

Location: Noel Fine Arts Center at UW-Stevens Point

Registration includes lunch and a t-shirt.

Please bring your instrument and any music you are currently practicing.

Participate in an exciting day of mater classes, string ensembles, 
techniques classes, and class on special topics.  The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point string professors will lead workshops for violin, viola, cello and bass.
Coaching of solos, études, and music for small ensembles will be available, along with other techniques classes. There will also be a unique opportunity for a side-by-side orchestral experience with UW-Stevens Point students and string faculty.

Virtuoso Violins

  • Perform in a violin ensemble
  • Master the hidden qualities of a great bow hand
  • Getting comfortable with the entire fingerboard
  • Develop great intonation and beautiful string crossings

Viola Power

  • Individual and group coaching sessions
  • Bring your solo and ensemble music, or what you are currently learning
  • Learn about tone production and other bow techniques
  • Shifting on the Viola: How we get around the shoulder of the instrument and other shifting techniques
  • Play in a viola ensemble

Cello Artistry

  • Explore bow arm basics and how they contribute to artistry
  • Play in a cello choir
  • Have an opportunity to play in and observe a cello master class
  • Take a virtual journey as we explore the amazing resources for cellists on the internet

Bass Essentials

  • Receive coaching on solo ensemble and audition music
  • Study various technical issues on the bass including intonation, fingerings, and thumb position
  • Work on concepts for performing jazz and orchestral music
  • Play in a bass ensemble

Barbara Beechey - Viola

Dr. Barbara Beechey is an active performer and educator in Wisconsin, where she is Principal Viola of both the Fox Valley Symphony and the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestras. She has been a soloist with the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed in Luxembourg, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic.


Stevens Bjella - Violin

Professor Steven Bjella has performed throughout the United States, appearing both as soloist and in a variety of chamber ensembles. He has given master classes across the country, and recently completed two books on violin pedagogy. At UW-Stevens Point, he holds the titles of Artist/Teacher of Violin and Professor of Music.


Lawrence Leviton - Cello

Dr. Lawrence Leviton has been active as a clinician and performer throughout the country. He has been a frequent performer on Wisconsin Public Radio. He has appeared with the orchestras of the Aspen Music Festival, the Joffrey Ballet, and serves as co-principal cello in the Chicago Chamber Orchestra. His students have won numerous awards in Wisconsin and nationally.


David Story - Bass

Professor David Story is equally at home in classical and jazz as well as many other genres of music. He performs frequently in orchestral and chamber concerts. Broadway musicals, solo recitals, and at numerous jazz venues.
