Details

English Professor Emeritus, Julie Tharp has been instructing these enjoyable classes for years. Each class includes dinner, film and discussion. She enjoys teaching film studies, traveling around the world, and trying international foods. The spring classes will explore the theme of complicated love.

“The Blue Caftan” | Monday, January 29
Halim and Mina run a traditional caftan store in one of Morocco's oldest medinas. In order to keep up with demanding customers, they hire a talented young man as an apprentice. Mina slowly realizes just how much her husband is moved by his presence.  Our Moroccan dinner will include tomato lentil soup (harira), chicken tagine, couscous, baguette, and Moroccan orange cake with cardamom whipped cream.

“Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day” | Wednesday, February 28
It's 1939 in London and governess Guinevere Pettigrew finds herself out of work and on the bread line. Middle-aged and running out of options, she takes an uncharacteristic gamble when she pinches the details of a juicy assignment.  Our traditional English dinner offers homity pie with endive salad, roast beef and potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, brussels sprouts, and mince pie with ice cream.

“The Big Sick” | Tuesday, March 26
Kumail is a Pakistani comic, who meets an American graduate student named Emily at one of his stand-up shows. As their relationship blossoms, conflict develops with his traditional Muslim parents. When Emily suddenly comes down with an illness that leaves her in a coma, Kumail has to forge creative solutions.  His family favorites include chicken mulligatawny soup, rogan josh, chickpea masala, biryani with potatoes, mango ice cream and halvah.

“Past Lives” | Thursday, April 25
Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends, are wrest apart after Nora's family emigrates from South Korea. Decades later, they are reunited for one fateful week as they confront destiny, love and the choices that make a life.  Our Korean fusion dinner will be catered from BroKogi with egg cakes, fried dumplings, beef bulgogi, spicy pork, and honey butter chicken.

“Barbie” | Tuesday, May 28
Barbie and Ken suffer crises that lead them to question their roles, their relationship, and the meaning of their lives.  We will ponder the meaning of Ken's Kabobs, Barbiecue Chicken, Beach Blanket Baked Beans, Malibu Mac n Cheese, Surfin' Salad, and Skipperberry Shortcake.
