Mission

The Central Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra Program (CWYSOP) provides a high quality symphonic performing experience for committed middle-level and high school students who, with other like-minded musicians, wish to perform great symphonic literature, raise their level of playing and nurture their love of music.

Program

Founded in 2014, in partnership with the UWSP Music Department, Aber Suzuki Center, Continuing Education and Outreach and music educators in Central Wisconsin, the Central Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra Program (CWYSOP) is comprised of two symphony orchestras: Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonia. These ensembles are open to all students who will be placed by audition. The program also offers a Percussion Ensemble for all percussion students. Students receive coaching from top UWSP music majors, UWSP and Aber Suzuki Center faculty in state-of-the-art facilities at the Noel Fine Arts Center on the UW-Stevens Point campus.

Ensembles

Symphony Orchestra
The Symphony Orchestra performs standard orchestral repertoire. Members generally have three or more years of ensemble experience and perform at an advanced level. The Symphony Orchestra is under the direction of Kurt Van Tiem and rehearses Sunday afternoons from 3-5:15 p.m. This ensemble performs two concerts each season with tours in future plans. Symphony Orchestra members receive sectional coaching from UW-Stevens Point music education majors and master classes from Music Department and Aber Suzuki faculty over the course of each season.

Philharmonia
The Philharmonia performs string orchestra and full orchestra literature generally from standard middle school to high school level. Members should have 2-3 years of private study or school ensemble experience. The Philharmonia is under the direction of Stephan Wucherer and rehearses Sunday afternoons from 3-4:45 p.m. The Philharmonia performs two concerts per season. Philharmonia members receive sectional coaching from UW-Stevens Point music education majors and master classes from Music Department and Aber Suzuki faculty over the course of each season.

Percussion Ensemble
The CWYSOP Percussion Ensemble is required for CWYSOP percussion members. Led by Dr. Brian Baldauff, director of percussion studies at UWSP and assisted by current music majors in the percussion studio; the Ensemble offers an engaging, fun, and supportive experience, focused on the mission of improving skills in musicianship, technique, and ensemble playing. The rehearsals coincide with CWYSOP rehearsal dates and feature repertoire from the standard percussion literature and new compositions. Rehearsals and lessons will teach students a well-rounded approach to percussion playing, skills they can also use in their school music programs. Concerts and performances will occur during the CWYSOP season. The ensemble is included as part of the registration fee.
