Scope and Authority: The University Personnel Development Committee is responsible for developing policies and criteria necessary to maintain a viable program for the development of university personnel. It has authority to recommend funding of grant applications (e.g., research, personnel development, and teaching improvement). The University Personnel Development Committee is the primary university coordinator of UW and UWSP development programs.
Grant-related questions should be directed to the UPDC Chair or the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP).
Course Innovation Grant
The Course Innovation (CI) grant is a per-credit stipend to develop innovative pedagogy for a course, including novel or creative course objectives and/or instruction.

Professional Development Grant
Professional Development (PD) grants support opportunities for university employees to expand their knowledge base and to increase effectiveness – particularly when adapting to the changing needs and interests of campus stakeholders.
Application portal
Applicants for the PD grant must submit their application via the submission portal. The portal is only open the month before each application deadline. Find the application under the Task List. Once you start an application, you can click Save and then Close for Later and return to complete it later, if necessary. Remember to click Submit when finished.

Note: Applications for $1,000 or less are exempt from annual deadlines and can be submitted any time by completing the application template (under application preview) to the left and sending it to ORSP@uwsp.edu. One request per fiscal year per individual may be awarded as funds are available. See more information in the UPDC Grant Guidelines. Please allow 2-3 weeks for processing.
Research & Creative Activities Grant
Research and Creative Activities (RCA) grants support scholarly investigation and creative productions.

Publication Fund
Publication Funds (PF) support publication of scholarly and creative work. Funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis each fiscal year for first or collaborating authors. It does not support non-refereed publication. Please see the Grant Guidelines before completing the application.

Creative Dissemination Fund
Creative Dissemination Funds support faculty and staff in the dissemination of their work through media that is not supported by the Publication Fund. Funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis each fiscal year. Please see the Grant Guidelines before completing the application.

Wisconsin Teaching Fellows and Scholars
WTFS is a professional and instructional development program offered by the Universities of Wisconsin. UWSP instructors apply first to UPDC to have their application selected to be forwarded to UW. Please review the UWSP guidelines and requirements before applying.

The UWSP Intramural Budget Form is required for the grant applications
A final report is required at the completion of the grant.
Annual Reports of UPDC activity
Check with…
- Library Collections about the purchase of any books or non-print library materials
- ORSP about ethical or safety guidelines for human or animal subjects of hazardous materials
- IT and Information Security staff for any technology proposals, including the purchase of software or technology
- Purchasing or Payment Services for any questions about allowable costs under university or state policies and laws
Rules:
- UPDC does not fund retroactively
- Those with active grants cannot reapply in the same category as the active grant
- Final reports on any earlier UPDC grants must be submitted before applying for new grants
- Laptops, PCs, and tablets are not allowable expenses
- UPDC does not fund prizes, awards, or gifts
- UPDC grants are seed funding. For any ongoing work, the applicant must show that the proposal represents new and distinct work.
Recommendations:
- Adhere to grant guidelines
- Budget for allowable items and actual costs
- Provide an accessible, well-written grant narrative
- Show clear value or benefit to the university/students
- Include letter(s) of support
- Submit by the UPDC deadline!
