Communication is a very popular major, and we are committed to keeping our standards high so that our graduates will be recognized for their strong skills and knowledge. If you are interested in becoming a Communication major, you should first go to the Communication office (CAC 225) to make an appointment to meet with the Undergraduate Advising Coordinator (UAC). The UAC will discuss your options in the major and assign you an advisor.

Communication Major (BS)

Consists of a minimum of 41 credits in communication courses:

  1. Required: COMM100 or ARTM 100 (must be taken during first seven UWSP Comm credits), COMM 200, 201, 400.
  2. Complete requirements for one emphasis area (below).
  3. Eighteen credits must be in courses numbered 300 or above.
  4. Comm 101 may not be used to complete the major.
  5. Communication in the Major requirements will be satisfied by 200, 201.
  6. Capstone requirements will be satisfied by Comm 400.

Communication Major (BA)

Consists of a minimum of 41-49 credits in communication courses:

  1. Required: COMM100 or ARTM 100 (must be taken during first seven UWSP Comm credits), COMM 200, 201, 400.
  2. Complete requirements for one emphasis area (below).
  3. Complete a two-semester sequence of university entry level world language courses or equivalent (0-8 credits).
  4. Eighteen credits must be in courses numbered 300 or above.
  5. Comm 101 may not be used to complete the major.
  6. Communication in the Major requirements will be satisfied by 200, 201.
  7. Capstone requirements will be satisfied by Comm 400.

Areas of Emphasis

Courses listed below with an asterisk (*) may be repeated for credit under different subtitles.

Interpersonal and Organizational Communication - Required: Comm 240, 280, 345. Electives: At least 15 credits from Comm *342, 343, *348,*349, 382, 383, *385, 387, *388, *389, *390 (interpersonal or organizational focus), 392, 394, 396, 397.

Media Studies – Required : Comm 105, 106, 107, 460.  Students must also complete an internship (Comm 480) or externship (Comm 485). Electives: 12 credits with 9 at the 300/400-level and a minimum of 3 credits in each category:

Media History, Theory Criticism: Comm 160, 190, 292, 306, 307, 325, *329, 357, *359, 360, 361, *362, *363, *367, *369, *390 (MS relevant focus).

Media Writing: Comm 221, 320, 321, *323, 326, 327, *351, 373.

Media Production: Comm 253, 254, 322, *352, *354, *356.

Public Relations – Required: Comm 221, 230, 334, 431. Students must also complete an internship (Comm 480) or externship (Comm 485). Electives: At least 12 credits from Comm *322, *330, 333, 336, *338, 339, *390 (PR-relevant focus), 392.
