Basketball Analytics: Spatial Tracking

The NBA now records the locations of all players and the ball during the course of games. This allows for entirely new ways of analyzing team and player performance. We will discuss ways of leveraging this new spatial information to gain basketball insights. Specifically, we will look at how teams space the floor on offense and how defenses are reacting. Participants will be introduced to several metrics and analyses using spatial tracking and gain an appreciation for modern offensive and defensive basketball strategies around the 3-point shot.

Stephen Shea, PhD is Chair of Mathematics at Saint Anselm College. He is author of Basketball Analytics: Spatial Tracking and a consultant for NBA teams and players.
