Improving Long-Term MLS Roster

Management with Survival Analysis

As Major League Soccer teams expand their academy and reserve squad structures, the ability to develop youth prospects becomes increasingly important. Kevin will discuss how to use models from survival analysis to incorporate those prospects in creating a framework for smarter long-term roster management. Attendees will learn what the current state of prospect development in MLS looks like, how to model and measure certain time-to-event processes related to those prospects, and what benefits can be gained from approaching squad planning with a probabilistic mindset.

Kevin Minkus is a data scientist at Allstate in Chicago. He is also a contributor to American Soccer Analysis, a blog focused on applying advanced stats to Major League Soccer, and occasionally consults for professional teams.
