Optimum Quantity of Defensemen
in a Hockey Lineup
The Tampa Bay Lightning have frequently deployed an unconventional lineup over the past few years, utilizing seven defensemen rather than the traditional six. In an attempt to identify the optimal lineup construction, we will evaluate both roster structures across team, offensive and defensive levels, along with other potential variables, to gain the best perspective when evaluating and comparing the performances of both lineups.
Eric Cantor is a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University, studying applied economics with a quantitative methods focus. He is an active member and researcher in the hockey analytics community.
