College Baseball Analytics

College baseball has seen a significant increase in the use of analytics in the last several years. This presentation will introduce methods for data collection and analysis that can be utilized by teams at every level. Particular focus will be on applications to player development, roster management and in-game strategy.

After working with the University of Nebraska baseball team for five years, Brad Smith was named assistant director of sports analytics in August 2016. Smith earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics with an emphasis on actuarial science from Pittsburg State University in 2006 and then completed a master's degree in mathematics in 2010. In addition, Smith became an associate of the Society of Actuaries in 2009, and earned his master's degree in statistics from Nebraska in 2012. He is currently pursuing his doctorate in the quantitative, qualitative and psychometric methods program in the Department of Educational Psychology at Nebraska.
