The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma
The University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s College of Fine Arts & Communication with the
support of the Sentry Insurance
Invitation to the Arts series, will welcome legendary musician Yo-Yo Ma and
the Silk Road Ensemble to Stevens Point October 15 – 18 to cap off Sentry’s
“Century in Stevens Point” celebration.
Mr. Ma is the leading cellist of
our time and a best-selling classical recording artist. He has received
numerous awards, including 15 Grammy Awards, Avery Fisher Prize (1978), the
Glenn Gould Prize (1999), the National Medal of the Arts (2001), the Dan David
Prize (2006), the World Economic
Forum’s Crystal Award (2008), the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2010) and the
Polar Music Prize (2012).
Yo-Yo Ma was born in 1955 to
Chinese parents living in Paris. He began to study the cello with his father at
age four and soon came with his family to New York, where he spent most of his
formative years. Later, his principal teacher was Leonard Rose at The Juilliard
School.
Mr. Ma is founder and artistic director of the Silk Road
Ensemble, a collective of internationally renowned performers and composers
from more than 20 countries who collaborate on a diverse range of musical and
multimedia projects.

are widely recognized for their strong commitment to educational programs that
bring the world into the classroom and the classroom into the world. As part of
the educational outreach aspect of the Sentry
Insurance Invitation to the Arts series, the musicians from the Silk Road Ensemble will work with area
elementary and high school students as well as students from UW-Stevens Point
and the Aber Suzuki Center during their four-day residency.

Invitation to the Arts is sponsored by the Sentry Insurance Foundation in
conjunction with the College of Fine Arts and Communication at the UW-Stevens
Point. Now in its ninth year, the program provides local students – from grade
school through college – opportunities to interact with outstanding
professionals in the fine arts.
