English in the Field

Northern Michigan teachers Michele Arquette-Palermo and Amanda Oparka presented some great ideas for English in the field. A simple format poem called Sense what I Sense: 1st line:What I sense?; 2nd line Name of object; 3rd Use adjective or a descriptive phrases; 4th What does it remind you of or what is it doing; 5th describe where you found it; 6th line Make a comment or ask a question.  Add a drawing and it is complete. This lesson yielded the below poem from a 3rd grader, drawing was add latter.


Feel what I Feel

Tree Bark

It is so scratchy and rough

It feels like my grandpas beard

It is hugging the tree

Why is it so rough?
