Plan Commission Workshops

The Center for Land Use Education offers plan commission workshops serving single and multi-county areas of Wisconsin. Workshops are designed for newly appointed plan commission members, veteran commissioners tackling complex issues, elected officials, and staff whose job it is to support local commissions.

Fall 2019

Workshops for Local Planning and Zoning Officials 

Friday, November 15, 2019 - Kenosha County Center, Bristol, WI

These workshops will help you understand the roles and responsibilities of local land use decision-makers. The morning session is designed for the zoning board of adjustment and appeals. The afternoon session is designed for the plan commission and elected officials. Planning and zoning staff, administrators, clerks, and interested officials may attend one or both sessions for a single workshop fee. Lunch is included for all participants from noon – 1pm. When registering, please indicate which session(s) you plan to attend.

The Basics of Zoning: Workshop for Local Planning and Zoning Officials

This workshop will provide an overview of the roles and responsibilities of local government officials involved in administering zoning and subdivision regulations. We will discuss the purpose of these regulations and the legal standards and procedures for making decisions.

Using & Updating the Comprehensive Plan

This workshop will provide an overview of the roles and responsibilities of local government officials involved in community planning. We will discuss the purpose and uses of the comprehensive plan, tools that can be used to implement the plan, options for updating the plan, and available resources.

Workshop for Local Planning and Zoning Officials

This workshop will focus on local planning, zoning, and subdivision responsibilities. We will cover legal standards and processes, impartial decision-making, and recording decisions. Members of your plan commission, governing body, and staff who support these positions are encouraged to attend. 



Spring 2019

Workshop for Local Planning and Zoning Officials 

Wednesday, May 15, 2019 - Greenville Town Hall, Greenville, WI

This day-long workshop is designed for local elected officials, plan commissions, and zoning boards of adjustment and appeals. Local government staff and community members are also welcome to attend. The workshop will help you understand the roles and responsibilities of local land use decision-makers, standards for decision-making, and procedural responsibilities. Participants are welcome to attend the entire workshop, or just those portions relevant to their positions.

Print copies of the Plan Commission (PC) Handbook and Zoning Board (ZB) Handbook may be purchased for an additional cost of $20 apiece. These handbooks are recommended for new and continuing officials but are not required to attend the workshop. The
handbooks are also accessible, free of charge, to download in PDF format.

Fall 2018

Workshop for Local Planning & Zoning Officials 
Genesee Town Hall, Waukesha County, WI

Tuesday, October 30, 2018 

These workshops will help you learn more about state laws related to conditional use permits. We will explore new state statutes, the role of local decision-makers, the public hearing process, and what happens when a decision is appealed.  A panel discussion following the presentation will focus on sharing knowledge and experiences to help you become a more effective plan commissioner.

These workshops will provide a brief overview of those changes and help local officials understand their role in making local planning and zoning decisions.
