KEEP's School-to-home Program empowers teachers and students to be part of the energy solution by bridging the energy education gap from the classroom to the home! Through classroom visits, hands-on resources, and curriculum this program allows students to explore energy conservation and efficiency topics while building skills to investigate their own energy consumption and use at home.

Investigations for Students in Energy Efficiency (I-SEE)

Through technology already in students’ schools and homes, I-SEE helps ignite curiosity and interest of tomorrow’s analysts, scientists, and engineers. Leveraging their own real-life energy consumption data through experimentation, students build knowledge, skills and confidence to reason through modern challenges and make a real difference, right now. Students are engaged through STEMhero’s online energy tracking dashboard, Alliance to Save Energy’s in-class Student Energy Audit Training (SEAT) workshop, and KEEP’s hands-on energy audit toolkit for school and home use.

Grades: 6-12

Why Implement I-SEE?

Teacher Benefits

  • Standards-based middle school unit enhancement
  • One-year subscription to STEMhero's web-based learning platform
  • Facilitated in-class student workshop
  • Energy audit tools lending kit
  • On-going support services

Student Benefits

  • Increased energy literacy
  • Hands-on STEM skill building

 Student Energy Audit Training (SEAT)

Turn your school into an energy efficiency “laboratory.” STEM role models will assist in facilitating this in-school field trip with the help of school facility personnel. Use hands-on activities to show students they have the power to influence energy use at their schools and homes. This Alliance to Save Energy program is offered in half- and full-day formats.

Grades: 6-8

Why Implement SEAT?

Teacher Benefits

  • Facilitated in-class student workshop
  • Energy audit tools lending kit
  • Incorporates interdisciplinary concepts
  • Uses the school building as a teaching tool

Student Benefits

  • Hands-on STEM activities
  • Relevant experimentation

 Watt's Up Unit

Dive into three lesson unit that helps students discover personal energy consumption. Lesson one and three are taught by you. Lesson three is facilitated by KEEP, your Utility, or other local energy experts. Lesson one explores energy use in the classroom and at home. Lesson two investigates how energy is measured through hands-on investigation using watt meters and how to calculate energy costs. The final lesson introduces students to energy conservation and efficiency and energy action plan development.

Grades: 6-8

Why Implement Watt's Up?

Teacher Benefits

  • Packaged 3-day lesson plans
  • Facilitated in-class energy lesson

Student Benefits

  • Increased energy literacy
  • Hands-on STEM skill building
  • Relevant experimentation
  • Practice developing action plans
  • Adoption of energy-saving habits

Hands-on Lending Resources

 Take-home Energy Audit Kit

Have students go beyond the classroom to explore the energy they use every day. This kit includes the tools and information needed to explore various uses of energy in the home, including how many appliances pull phantom loads or whether or not your refrigerator temperature is at its most efficient setting.

Grades: 6-8

To explore or check out trunks or kits, visit KEEP's Hands-on Resources Lending Program.

 Energy Audit Kit

The Energy Audit Kit includes easy-to-use tools to perform simple energy assessments and behavior investigations in the classroom. Monitor plug load, moisture, light, and temperature levels to find energy loss in any building. Aids in integrating technology into math and science curriculum.

Grades: 5-12

To explore or check out trunks or kits, visit KEEP's Hands-on Resources Lending Program.

 Watts Up? Meters

Watt Meters are a tool that can be used to measure the electric usage of appliances. By plugging an appliance into the meter and then into a socket, you can measure the actual electric use of a particular appliance. You can also try contacting your local library to see if they have a watt meter to check out.

Grades: 5-12

To explore or check out trunks or kits, visit KEEP's Hands-on Resources Lending Program.

 Lending Library

Are you looking for hands-on teaching resources for your energy lessons? There is an amazing array of educational trunks and kits available to educators through the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education. Many of these trunks can be borrowed for a few weeks at a time and contain various resources that are linked to Next Generation Science Standards as well as Common Core and Wisconsin State standards. Trunks and kits include a Pedal Power stationary bike, sun oven, hand-crank generator, and more!

Grades: K-12
