Alcohol and Marijuana Educational Sanctions

Individual Alcohol Assessment

  • Students sanctioned for alcohol use by their conduct officers are required to complete alcohol education class and have a follow-up alcohol assessment meeting with professional staff from the Center for Prevention and Health Promotion.
  • 30-minute alcohol education class and a personalized 1-1 alcohol assessment.
  • Students will reach out to professional staff to complete this sanction.  Contact information will be in the conduct letter.

During this alcohol education session students will learn about the following:

  • Drinking culture
  • Social Perceptions of Alcohol Use
  • Creating a community of Pointers watching out for each other (bystander intervention)
  • Alcohols effect on the body and brain
  • How alcohol affects a student’s life
  • Personalized assessment of alcohol use

BASICS – Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students

  • BASICS is an alcohol use intervention program that uses a harm reduction approach and is intended to motivate students to reduce their alcohol use and decrease the negative consequences of their drinking. 
  • Students have two 1-on-1 meetings to assess their drinking patterns and develop a change plan.

Marijuana 101

  • Online Education – Marijuana 101 is an online program aimed to aid students in assessing and evaluate their marijuana use, as well as helps students track their smoking behaviors. 
  • Follow-Up Meeting – The one-on-one follow-up meeting is an opportunity for students to discuss marijuana use privately and explore possibilities for personal growth and change. The meeting takes 30-45 minutes.
  • Follow-up Online Survey – The last part of the sanction requirement is a short survey based on information contained in Part 1. Students are asked to participate in Part 2 via email.

CASICS – Cannabis Abuse Screening and Intervention for College Students

  • CASICS is a marijuana intervention program where students have two 1-on-1 meetings to help them evaluate their own marijuana use, identify personal risks, and to plan ways to reduce consequences associated with their marijuana use.
  • Students have two 1-on-1 meetings to assess their drug use patterns and develop a change plan.
