Using this document  #

This document was developed using Styles for both navigation and Accessibility reasons. An easy way to navigate this document is to turn on the Navigation Pane. To do that in Word, click View and check the box next to Navigation Pane, then click the heading of the section you wish to view to navigate directly to that section. You may have to download the document to the desktop Word App for this to function properly. 

Overview of Kaltura in Canvas  #

Canvas provides many efficiencies for Kaltura users: 

• Students can upload and/or embed a video in their Canvas course. 

• The Kaltura Capture recording tool and video editor are also accessible through Canvas. 

• Instructors and students who work at or attend multiple UWs (except Madison) will be able to access all their Kaltura materials through Canvas across institutions.  

Overview of Features:   #

• Upload and Embed Videos into a Canvas Course: If you know where in your course a video is going to be shared with students, you can upload into a page in the appropriate module. Students can upload to assignments or discussions.  

• Access and Manage Videos: You can access the same features through your Canvas account through a link in your “Account” button called “My Media.” Here you can use the Kaltura recording tool, delete videos, upload videos, create video quizzes, edit videos, change thumbnails, add captions, add tags, add co-editors and co-publishers, change ownership of files and view analytics.  

• Webcam Recording: This tool allows users to create webcam recordings directly from their internet browser.  

• Desktop Recording Tool: Kaltura Capture is the desktop recording tool. Kaltura Capture can be downloaded and installed on multiple machines. Kaltura Capture allows users to record a webcam, a screen, and audio simultaneously, or any combination as set by the user. Recordings are then saved and uploaded to My Media where they can be edited, captioned, and shared.  

• Video Editor: Kaltura offers a basic web-based video editing tool. The tool allows the beginning or end of videos to be trimmed and allows segments in the middle of videos to be cut out.

Access Kaltura (My Media)  #

To access Kaltura (My Media), you will need to login to Canvas.  

1. Login to Canvas 

2. Click on your Account (top left icon, just below the UWSP seal) 

3. Click My Media 

Record Videos with the Webcam Recorder  #

The Kaltura Webcam Recorder tool allows users to record video and audio or just audio from an internet browser. The Webcam Recorder can be accessed through My Media or using the Kaltura integration in the Canvas Rich Content Editor (RCE). (see below for detailed instructions) 

1. The Kaltura Webcam recording tool can be accessed two ways. 

1. Either by logging into Canvas, navigating to My Media, clicking Add New, and selecting Webcam Recording. 

2. OR by selecting My Media from the Rich Content Editor (RCE) in Canvas, clicking Add New and selecting Webcam Recorder. NOTE: the RCE is available in many tools in Canvas including: Announcements, Assignments, Quizzes, Discussions, and Pages. 

2. After selecting the Webcam Recorder, allow access to your microphone and camera if you are prompted to do so. 

3. Click the red Record Button, record your video, and click stop when you are done. 

4. You will be presented with three choices. 

1. Record Again – allows you to record again 

2. Download a Copy – allows you to download a copy to save locally 

3. Use This – will save the video to the cloud and embed it in Canvas. NOTE: it will be embedded at the location from which your cursor was when you started recording. 

5. To embed the recording directly in Canvas, click Use This and wait for the video to process. 

6. Edit the video Name and Description if you desire to.  

7. Click Save and Embed 

Use the Kaltura Integration to submit a video  #

Follow these instructions if your instructor has asked you to embed a video in an assignment.  

1. Login to Canvas and navigate to the assignment. 

2. Click Submit Assignment 

3. Click the multicolored starburst icon to access My Media 

To Upload a Video: (skip these instructions if the video has already been uploaded)  #

1. Click Add New on the top right. 

2. Select Media Upload. 

3. Agree to the terms and conditions.  

4. On the Upload Media page, click on “Choose a file to upload.”  

5. Find the file on your computer and double click on the file or click Open to upload. 

6. The blue progress bar will turn green when the upload is complete. Large files may take minutes to upload.  

7. Ensure the name is accurate. The name of the uploaded file will be used by default.  

To Embed a Video that has already been uploaded or recorded:   #

1. After clicking Embed Kaltura Media, navigate to the appropriate video and click the blue Embed button on the right side of it.  

2. The video will be embedded into your page. Click Save.  

To record a new video using the Webcam Recorder, See Above Section  #

Upload Videos to Your Kaltura Repository (Not to a Specific Course)  #

1. Login to Canvas. 

2. Click Account in the global navigation on the left.   

3. Select My Media.  

4. If this is your first time using Kaltura within Canvas, you will need to click Authorize.  

5. Click Add New on the top right.  

6. Choose Media Upload.  

7. On the Upload Media page, click Choose a file to upload. 

8. Find the file on your computer and double click the file or click Open to upload. 

9. The blue progress bar will turn green when the upload is complete. Large files may take minutes to upload.  

10. Ensure the name is accurate. The name of the uploaded file will be used by default.  

KalturaCapture (the Kaltura Desktop Recording Tool)  #

KalturaCapture is a desktop recording tool that you can download and install on your computer. KalturaCapture allows you to create screen recordings (screen capture or screencasts). You can follow the instructions below to install KalturaCapture on your computer and to use KalturaCapture to record and upload videos to Kaltura MyMedia (your private video storage area in Kaltura) 

Install KalturaCapture – Windows  #

1. Login to Canvas. 

2. Click Account in the global navigation on the left.    

3. Select My Media.  

4. If this is your first time using Kaltura within Canvas, you will need to click Authorize.  

5. Click Add New on the top right.  

6. Choose KalturaCapture.  

7. Select Download for Windows. 

8. Double click the downloaded file to start the installation process (varies by browser – in Google Chrome the downloaded file will be in the bottom left side of your browser window).  

9. The application will walk you through an installation process. Click Next to proceed through the steps.  

10. After the program is installed, it will appear that nothing has happened.  

11. To complete the installation, refresh the webpage, repeat steps 5-6 above, installation will finish, and the program will launch.  

1. You may have to allow it access to open.  

12. Installation will include the addition of the KalturaCapture shortcut, a white square with a red dot in the center surrounded by a blue dashed line, on your computer desktop. To use KalturaCapture in the future, double click the KalturaCapture shortcut to launch the program. You do not need to be logged into Canvas to use the KalturaCapture desktop recorder. 

Install KalturaCapture – Mac  #

13. Login to Canvas. 

14. Click Account in the global navigation on the left.    

15. Select My Media.  

16. If this is your first time using Kaltura within Canvas, you will need to click Authorize.  

17. Click Add New on the top right.  

18. Choose KalturaCapture.  

1. Click Download for Mac 

2. Save the Download 

3. Double click the download to run 

4. Drag KalturaCapture into the Applications Folder 

5. Open KalturaCapture from the Applications Folder 

6. Click Open when asked if you are sure you want to open it 

7. When prompted to “Please launch Kaltura Capture from the “Add New” menu on your website, click OK 

8. Navigate back to the My Media website and refresh the page 

9. Click Add New 

10. Click Kaltura Capture 

11. Check the Always Allow box 

12. Click Open Kaltura Capture 

13. You will likely have to allow access to your microphone and camera 

14. You will likely be required to grant access to the application in Privacy & Security Settings 

15. If you are installing on a UWSP computer and are prompted for Administrator credentials, you will need to contact the UWSP IT Service Desk. 715-346-4357. 

16. You may have to Quit and Reopen KalturaCapture to finalize the install 

Record with Kaltura Capture  #

1. After you have installed Kaltura Capture (see above), you do NOT need to login to Canvas to record using Kaltura Capture. 

2. Double click the Kaltura Capture shortcut installed on your desktop.    

3. Ensure you are recording the correct screens. KalturaCapture can record two different inputs such as the screen and your webcam to create a picture-in-picture recording. In the resulting video, students can toggle the options to choose their view. For instance, they can choose to view the screen large/webcam small, webcam large/screen small, side by side, or they can hide one of the options altogether.
    
   If you have multiple monitors connected while recording, take careful note! It may record both monitors by default. In the screenshot below, both a monitor and a webcam would be recorded.  
   To turn off one of the inputs, click on it so it turns grey with a line through it. In the screenshot below, the screen would be recorded and the webcam is turned off.  

4. Check your microphone. You should see lines moving below the microphone icon. Click the drop down to choose a different microphone if necessary.  

5. When ready, click the red record button.  

TIP: Do a test recording of a few seconds to ensure that the correct inputs are recording and your audio is adequate. There is no immediate preview with Kaltura Capture. You will need to upload to view and delete your test recording.  

6. The recording toolbar appears. When done, click the white stop button.  

7. You will be asked if you are sure you want to stop the recording. Click Yes, Stop it to confirm.  

8. The next screen will allow you to change the title if you wish. You can  

• Delete the file if you know you do not want it. 

• Save and Upload if you want to preview it or use it (remember you currently need to upload it to watch it) 

• Save if you do not want to upload it at this time (it will remain in your Library) 

9. If you choose Save and Upload, the next screen will show the progress of your upload. To view it, click on the blue URL that appears which will open up your My Media area.  

NOTE: It may take several hours for the video to appear. Until it is done processing, a camera icon will show in the thumbnail. If the page does not refresh with an accurate thumbnail, click on the video to view it as a new page.
