Tagging videos for Closed Caption Review

Machine closed captioning is automatically completed for all videos recorded in or uploaded to Kaltura. This can take several hours to process. 

The new Title II Accessibility Guidelines require that all closed captions are human checked for accuracy. UWSP CITL has student employees who can check and edit captions for accuracy. If you want the student employees to check your captions, follow the instructions below to add tags to your videos. 

Adding Tags to Kaltura Videos  #

  • Access My Media 
  • Locate the “Edit” icon to the far right of the entry you wish to tag. The Edit icon looks like a pencil . 
  • The Tags section is below the Name and Description sections.  If you start typing “uwsp_” the tags we are using for caption remediation should populate in your selection choice.  Apply any or all of the tags as needed. The tags are described below. 
  • uwsp_cc_review – add this tag to indicate to us that we need to review the captions for this video. This tag will be removed after remediation.
  • uwsp_cc_online – add this tag to indicate that the video is used in an online or hybrid course. This tag will be removed after remediation. 
  • uwsp_cc_sensitive – add this tag if your video contains sensitive material (nudity, violence, sexually explicit etc.).  We ask for this only so we can direct these videos away from student workers requesting to not work with this type of content.  This tag will be removed after remediation. 

            Edit Closed Captions Yourself  #

            If you would like to remediate your own captions in Kaltura you are welcome to do so.  The resources below will provide guidance on editing captions in Kaltura, and what work needs to be done to bring captions into accessibility compliance. 

            If your department plans to remediate their own content, CITL can provide a copy of the manual we created for our captioning technicians.  Please let us know that your department plans to remediate their own captions so we can avoid duplication of efforts. 

            • Access My Media. 
            • Click on the video you want to edit captions for. 
            • Click the Actions dropdown menu and select Caption & Enrich. 
            • You will see the captions associated with your video. 
            • Click the pencil icon to launch the Closed Caption Editor 
            • Use the web-based caption editing tool to make edits and click Save when you are done.
