Overview of Kaltura in Canvas  #

Canvas provides many efficiencies for Kaltura users:

  • Instructors and students can upload and embed a video in their Canvas course during the same process.
  • The Kaltura Capture recording tool and video editor are also accessible through Canvas, rather than having to go to another website.
  • Instructors and students who work at or attend multiple UWs (except Madison) will be able to access all their Kaltura materials through Canvas across institutions.
  • Multiple instructors can access and share/embed the same Kaltura video via Canvas by adding collaborators. We will no longer need generic accounts or course repositories.

Overview of Features:   #

  • Upload and Embed Videos into a Canvas Course: If you know where in your course a video is going to be shared with students, you can upload into a page in the appropriate module. Students can upload to assignments or discussions.
  • Access and Manage Videos: You can access the same features through your Canvas account through a link in your “Account” button called “My Media.” Here you can use the Kaltura recording tool, delete videos, upload videos, create video quizzes, edit videos, change thumbnails, add captions, add tags, add co-editors and co-publishers, change ownership of files and view analytics. Currently it is not possible to set an unlisted URL shared outside of Canvas.
  • Webcam Recording: This tool allows users to create webcam recordings directly from their internet browser.
  • Desktop Recording Tool: Kaltura Capture is the desktop recording tool. Kaltura Capture can be downloaded and installed on multiple machines. Kaltura Capture allows users to record a webcam, a screen, and audio simultaneously, or any combination as set by the user. Recordings are then saved and uploaded to My Media where they can be edited, captioned, and shared.
  • Video Editor: Kaltura offers a basic web-based video editing tool. The tool allows the beginning or end of videos to be trimmed and allows segments in the middle of videos to be cut out.
  • Kaltura In Video Quiz: This tool allows users to create video quizzes. The quizzes can be used as formative assessments/knowledge checks that are not graded or can be assigned as Canvas Assignments that push grades to the Canvas gradebook.
  • Captions: Much like YouTube, Kaltura will have a voice recognition feature that can caption videos. Captions are a great feature for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, English language learners, or students who aren’t able to play sound for various reasons. The accuracy of this service is about 85%, but it will be possible to fix these captions to make them accurate.
  • Want Help? UWSP instructors and students can contact the Canvas Team (canvas@uwsp.edu).

Video Privacy Settings  #

  • Videos are Private by default. Private videos can be shared with students in Canvas courses through the Kaltura integration (for more information, see the instructions on sharing Kaltura videos in Canvas).
  • The “Published” option allows instructors to publish their videos to the media gallery of a particular course. However, we do not typically recommend the media gallery because it provides a repository of all Kaltura videos for a course in one spot without context.
  • Instead, it is more helpful to students to embed your videos in the appropriate module of your course. You do not need to publish your video to the media gallery to embed it.
  • Unlisted links (URLs) cannot currently be created through the Canvas integration. If you need to share a URL of a video outside of a Canvas course, use Mediaspace, the web front end for Kaltura, to share with others.
