Canvas is capable of integrating applications and textbook online content into a course. In many cases application and textbook publishers have created integration packages, which makes it easy for us to automatically add the content to Canvas. If you aren’t sure if the package you are looking for has an integration, you should ask your sales rep at the company.
Requesting Software integrations #
Software not currently integrated with Canvas can be requested. Applications need to be vetted by UWSA admins; they’ll check for security and privacy information, Intellectual Property Rights, accessibility statements, and arbitration clauses in the tools Terms of Service and Privacy policies. When the tool passes these checks, we’ll install the tool in a testing environment to ensure it will work the way you expect it to, and to ensure that it won’t break other aspects of the Canvas system. procurement will work to secure any changes needed to their terms of service, and obtain a signed agreement. Once it has passed these steps, it can be integrated into Canvas. This process takes 4-6 weeks to complete in most cases. Information on integrations and approval status can be found here.
The process should start with the UWSP Canvas team (canvas@uwsp.edu.)
Finding software integrated into Canvas #
Integrations in Canvas may appear in a few places. They may be in the tool icons within the Rich Content Editor, in the “account” button in the global navigation, in the inactive navigation items in your course, or integrated into the functions of the Module or Assignment creation tools.
To add one of these apps to your course, access Settings and choose the Apps tab. Click on the app you want to add to your course and choose “+Add App.” Complete any configuration options that may appear, then select “Add App.” The App should now be available in your course.
Rich content editor #
Apps like Kaltura and Films on demand are designed to allow you to place content from those sources directly into a course. A number of these are already integrated and available to you in the Rich Content Editor. You’ll find them on the second row of icons when adding content to Canvas. Current apps that are integrated in this way include:
- Office 365
- TedEd
- Films On Demand
- LibGuides
- Kaltura
As more apps are integrated into content, they will automatically appear in your courses.Navigation menu in Settings
Apps may be already enabled in Canvas, and available via the navigation tab within course settings. These Apps can be enabled in your course by dragging them from the inactive area (the bottom) into the active area (the top) and saving.
